Book: The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team

Patrick Lencioni

As we focus on creating “people centric” organizations, never has a book been more relevant on team dynamics than Patrick Lencioni’s book The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team. This Leadership Fable tells a compelling story of why most teams have struggles acting as a team. The powerful messages in the book reveal the 5 Dysfunctions that any team can and probably will experience and how to overcome them.

Written in 2002 and before the “new normal” economy, one can’t help but wonder if the current state of things in our world, country and organizations couldn’t have been avoided by understanding the concepts in this book. At the base of the dysfunctions described in Lencion’s book is Absence of Trust which leads to a Fear of Conflict. How many decisions are made that are wrong, that cost organizations thousands or millions of dollars, just because someone was afraid to speak up for Fear of Conflict?

Often when debriefing teams on this book I refer to the De La Salle Spartans Football team. This high school football team from Concord California had a staggering 151 game winning streak that spanned more than a decade. That amazing winning streak could not have been accomplished without having a strong team. Not strong individuals, a strong team.

So I ask this question; do you want your team to become like the De La Salle Football team? Then pickup 5 Dysfunctions of a Team and build a strong foundation in you people centric organization.
